"Keep It Real": An enthralling trip to the truth

"Keep It Real: Everything You Need to Know About Researching and Writing Creative Nonfiction"

edited by Lee Gutkind

Norton, 169 pp., $22.95

Creative nonfiction is a broad category of writing that uses "literary craft in presenting nonfiction," and while fabrication crosses the line — James Frey being only the most recent example — the genre allows considerable imaginative leeway and innovation.

In "Keep It Real," editor Lee Gutkind and a passel of experienced nonfiction writers have teamed up to write a stimulating and informative collection of short, digestible chapters on the marvels and pitfalls of creative nonfiction.

The genre has been around for a long time, but entered its modern heyday with the "New Journalism" of the 1960s and '70s — Norman Mailer, Truman Capote, Tom Wolfe and Hunter S. Thompson were the chief practitioners — and includes the current proliferation and popularity of memoirs. Straightforward nonfiction such as history, journalism and the standard essay evolved into writing that was more personal, subjective and experimental.

The organizational approach of "Keep It Real" — chapters on topics arranged alphabetically — seems haphazard at first, but the juxtaposition of practical advice and less-tangible aspects of the craft make for a pleasing eclecticism. A chapter called Compression is followed by Defamation and Libel; The Lyric Essay follows Legal Responsibilities of Publishers. There are fascinating disquisitions on the nature of memory and truth.

Although this is not a "how to" book, the authors define and describe the genre with specificity and good examples, generating plenty of options and approaches. One that caught my eye: the "lyric I" point of view and the use of the "fragmented braided essay form or the collage essay, where white space implies silence and meaning is created through oblique connections of images and metaphors rather than through a straightforward narrative story."

"Keep It Real" contains many more nuggets and demonstrates that nonfiction can be no less elastic or unfettered than fiction.

Foxboro Hot Tubs, Stop, Drop And Roll

With its faux-battered sleeve and go-go dancing logo you'd be right in thinking that Stop, Drop And Roll owes something to the 60s. As all fans now undoubtedly know, Foxboro Hot Tubs are, in reality, Green Day having a little retro fun on the side with their touring band along for the ride. 20-odd years on, the boys are as busy as ever, following a stamp-of-approval appearance in the Simpsons Movie in 2007. Much of this material was previously available free from the band's website but now, with an actual live tour in the offing, the album gets a proper physical release. Fans will go crazy, the rest of us may be a little less keen.

The problem with an album of pastiches is a question of authenticity. A comparable project would be the Dukes Of Stratosphear ; in reality XTC on a mission to recreate the best psychedelic sounds from their youth. Their two albums really did sound like they'd fallen through a hole in the space/time continuum. But Green Day, arch proponents of the three-minute punk pop outburst, while attempting various stylistic variations here, only really convince on the tracks that, well, sound like Green day (albeit Green day with the bass turned down). These include the title track, Mother Mary and Pieces Of Truth. It makes the whole album something of an oddity. Was it intended as a full-on recreation of an era, or are we just meant to take it as a GD album with many nods to the past? On either score it doesn't quite work. Stop, Drop And Roll is the 60s filtered through 80s punk.

Elsewhere the obvious nods are the Kinks (Alligator), The Doors (Red Tide), The Yardbirds (Dark Side Of Night) and a whole slew of garage punk (in the Nuggets sense of the word) bands like the Standells, Shadows Of Knight (Ruby Room, 27th Ave. Shuffle). It's the latter type of songs that best suit the band's dynamic: All blusterung chords, minimal guitar lead lines and a touch of wiggly organ thrown in for good measure. The writing is tight, the playing suitably spry and the hooks are plentiful. Certainly plentiful enough to keep the faithful happy for now. Yet, not unlike the Beastie Boys' recent foray into lacklustre psych funk, the majority of us will just wish that they'd get back to what they do best.

JEWEL

Perfectly Clear (Valory): B+

Producer John Rich (of Big & Rich) dresses Jewel in every
imaginable cowgirl style and the Alaskan songstress looks damn good in every one of them. Indeed, she sounds at home on the range in these twangy environs, which isn’t all that shocking given commercial country’s widened scope; much of Jewel’s catalog could qualify as country these days, even though it may not have when originally released. What is surprising is the trite songwriting that weakens her debut indie set. But she makes up for it with positive, fem-empowering messages infrequently aired in Nashville, where “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” still wins every time. Download: “Anyone But You.”

Ice-T (born Tracy Morrow) has proved to be one of hip-hop's most vocalize and reasoning stars, as considerably as one of its well-nigh frustrating. At his charles Herbert Best, the rapper has written some of the c. H. Best portraits of ghetto life and gangsters, as well as some of the topper social comment hip-hop has produced. Just as oftentimes, he can slip into sexism and gratuitous force, and even then his rhymes are ingenious and bitter. Ice-T's best recordings have e'er been made in alignment with strong collaborators, whether it's the Bomb Squad or Jello Biafra. With his euphony, Ice-T has made a conscious effort to gain the immense audience of white male adolescents, as his shop at excursions with his sonorous metal band Body Count show. All the piece, he has withstood a unceasing battery of unfavorable judgment and contention to become a respected figure not only in the euphony press, simply the mainstream media as well.

Although he was one of the leading figures of Californian rap in the '80s, Ice-T was natural in Newark, NJ. When he was a child, he stirred from his native Newark to California after his parents died in an automobile chance event. While he was in heights school, he became possessed with rap piece he went to Crenshaw High School in South Central Los Angeles. Ice-T took his name from Iceberg Slim, a pandar world Health Organization wrote novels and poetry. Ice-T used to con lines of Iceberg Slim's poetry, reciting them for friends and classmates. After he left wing high shoal, he recorded several undistinguished 12" singles in the former '80s. He also appeared in the low-budget hip-hop films Rappin', Breakin', and Breakin' II: Electric Boogaloo as he was nerve-wracking to build a life history.

Ice-T eventually landed a major-label record dispense with Sire Records in 1987, releasing his debut album, Rhyme Pays. On the record, he is supported by DJ Aladdin and producer Afrika Islam, wHO helped create the rolling, spare beats and samples that provided a backdrop for the rapper's charismatic rhymes, which were principally party-oriented; the book combat injury up release gold. That same year, he recorded the paper song for Dennis Hopper's Colours, a cinema nearly inner city lifetime in Los Angeles. The call -- also called "Colours" -- was stronger, both lyrically and musically, with more knifelike lyrics, than anything he had previously released. Ice-T formed his have track record label, Rhyme Syndicate (which was distributed through Sire/Warner) in 1988, and released Power. Ability was a more assured and impressive record, earning him firm reviews and his second gold record. Released in 1989, The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech...Just Watch What You Say accomplished him as a true hip-hop hotshot by matching first-class harsh euphony with ferocious, well-informed narratives, and political commentaries, especially about rap censoring.

Deuce old age later, Ice-T began an playing calling, star in the updated blaxploitation photographic film Young Jack City; he also recorded "Unexampled Jack Hustler" for the film. "New Jack Hustler" became one of the centerpieces of 1991's O.G.: Original Gangster, which became his to the highest degree successful album to escort. O.G. as well featured a alloy track called "Soundbox Count" recorded with Ice-T's band of the like refer. Ice-T took the band out on tour that summer, as he performed on the first-class honours degree Lollapalooza circuit. The circuit pitch increased his appeal with both alternate music fans and bourgeoisie teenagers. The following year, the rapper decided to released an entire record album with the dance band, too called Soundbox Count.

Body Count proven to be a major turning head in Ice-T's life history. On the footing of the track "Collar Killer" -- where he american ginseng from the stand of a law manslayer -- the record ignited a national arguing; it was protested by the NRA and police force militant groups. Time Warner Records ab initio supported Ice-T, in time they refused to release his unexampled rap record album, Home base Invasion, on the groundwork of the record cover. Ice-T and the label parted ways by the end of the year. Plate Invasion was released on Priority Records in the spring of 1993 to tepid reviews and gross sales. Somewhere along the way, Ice-T had begun to lose to the highest degree of his original rap music audience; now he appealed mainly to suburban white teens. In 1994, he wrote a book and released the second Body Count album, Born Dead, which failed to arouse up the same disceptation as the first record -- so, it failed to benefit much attention of any sort. Nevertheless, Body Count was successful in clubs and Ice-T continued to circuit with the set.

In the summer of 1996, Ice-T released his first rap album since 1993, Give back of the Real. The album was greeted by motley reviews and it failed to alive up to commercial expectations. 7th Deadly Sin followed in 1999. Ice-T then returned to playing, pickings a role on NBC's Law & Order : Special Victims Unit playing, ironically, a police officer.

Singer/songwriter Paul Michel is a old hand of Washington, D.C.'s hardcore view, only his solo work reflects a very different side of his musical personality; trading his galvanic guitar for an acoustic ax, he performs melodic and touching pop songs informed by personal business of the pump. Michel began playing music as a boy when his parents arranged for him to submit lessons in flamenco guitar, and as a teenager he developed a gustatory sensation for jazz before diving into the Washington, D.C., rock view. While perusing journalism in college, Michel played guitar with a number of punk-leaning D.C. bands, including Blue Line, the Hard Tomorrows, and Out_Circuit, just after a hard romantic breakup, he began focusing on his own songs and his possess style. Michel made his solo debut with the 2004 EP Ayuda!, released by the independent Magic Bullet tag (based in Fredericksburg, VA, non far from D.C.). A uncut album followed in 2005, These Are All Beautiful Things, and a minute EP, Revolve, appeared in the summer of 2006. Later that year, Michel sign with the Astoria, NY, tag Stunning Models on Display and recorded Quiet State of Panic, an album released cheeseparing the end of 2006 that integrated the quiet textures of his sooner recordings with a more eclectic pop/rock approach shot, boast some stiff galvanic guitar and a subtle merely pointed political broadside, "Your Name Is Icarus."
